What’s in your holistic medicine cabinet?
Some at home problems don’t need any intervention at all. Some need acetaminophen, ibuprofen, dextromethorphan or more. Thing is, most moderately granola moms know that there are miles between non-intervention and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals but they don’t know where to start.
Common problems like:
- colds and flu
- stomach upset
- bumps and bruises
- and achiness
are all things that can be treated naturally. So if you’re looking for the step between non-intervention and reaching for the OTC options, read on.
What’s in the kit?
The family Chinese Herbal Medicine Cabinet kit includes:
- Zheng Gu Shui for bumps, bruises, and arthritic pains. Because of it’s focus on bone pain and healing it can also be helpful for growing pains!
- Bi Yan Pian for sinus congestion due to colds, the flu and allergies.
- Yin Qiao San for cold and flu prevention, strep throat (in conjunction with antibiotics), colds with fever and sore throats
- Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San for stomach troubles, diarrhea and motion sickness. It can also be taken as a preventative for food sensitivities (but not intolerances or allergies so please be careful!)
The Pediatric Kit includes:
- Quiet Calm from Kan Herbals can help with fussiness, depression and anxiety, concentration, memory, focus and sleep
- Grow and Thrive from Kan Herbals can help with digestion, colic, poor appetite and assimilating nutrients

Who am I?
I am an acupuncturist, herbalist, author, and owner of Reverie Acupuncture, LLC.
Since 2012 I have been a partner to women through massage, nutrition, traditional and modern medicines, helping them connect with their bodies, minds, and spirits. I interned at Masonic Children’s Hospital, the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Regions Hospital. I currently operate a community acupuncture clinic from the upstairs yoga studio of Health Foundations Birth Center in St. Paul, MN.
When I’m not in clinic you can find me curled up with stacks of books on my couch with a cup of coffee. And if the couch is empty, check the woods; I’m probably out in the wilderness with my husband and daughter.
Are these kits right for you?
These kits have some good, general formulas but all medicinal things can have side effects.
If you choose to buy this kit it may behoove you to schedule an appointment with myself or a local herbalist to check for any danger herb-medication interactions or to see if the herbs are contraindicated for your pattern.
Always check with your own care provider before making any lifestyle changes for yourself or your family.
If you are on a laundry list of medications, stick with what your doctor says is healthy. There is such a thing as “too much medicine” and adding supplements may throw off your balance.
If you are doing any hormonal treatments for thyroid issues, fertility or menopause please avoid all herbs and supplements until they have been checked for interactions. Hormone balance is incredibly easy to disrupt.

How to get the kit
Because I don’t have the capability to do nationwide shipping AND I want to make sure that you have the best possible chance to have your questions answered, this kit is available for pick-up only.
You can order it online here and pick it up once it comes in at Health Foundation Birth Center on Wednesday or Friday nights from 5:30 to 8 at night.
If for some reason, that time doesn’t work email me and we can work out at time.
If you’re hesitant and you want to have a chat about it first schedule a free 15-minute consultation. We could do a quick interaction check to see if either kit is right for you, or if other herbs may be beneficial for you and your family.
Frequently asked questions
“How does herbal medicine work?”
It works the same way medications work – the chemicals of the plants, minerals and sometimes, animal products impact processes in our bodies, boosting immunity, reducing inflammation and helping hormones circulate better.
In fact, most medications on the market are derived from traditional medicine. They’ve just been concentrated to treat serious conditions. Statin drugs for cholesterol are derived from red yeast rice!
“Do I have to get acupuncture if I’m taking Chinese herbs?”
While I would love to see you in clinic, I have had a lot of success with patients treating with herbs and diet therapy. If you would ever like an herbal or diet therapy consult, schedule an acupuncture appointment with me and send me a “no needles, please!” message.
“How are Chinese herbs different from Western herbs?”
A lot of the difference is the philosophy of how they are used. My flower essence teacher and herbalist, Sarah Chappell explained that Western herbs are often used as one single herb to treat a problem until you don’t need it any more.
Chinese herbal formulas are typically multiple herbs that balance and harmonize each other and treat patterns, and not specific diseases.
