Acupuncture safety: Knowing your practitioner

“I have a question for you. Do you sanitize your needles?”

Of the questions I get about acupuncture, this is not one of the most common.

“No, the process of repeatedly sterilizing needles is really expensive and makes needles more prone to breaking. Reusing needles is dangerous anyway. I use single-use, disposable needles in sterile blister packs because I follow Clean Needle Technique.”

This continued into a lively discussion about CDC recommendations, licensing regulations and all sorts of other safety bits about acupuncture that made me think I should write up a blog post.

The fact is that his question was a very important question that triggers other questions:

  • What is Clean Needle Technique (CNT)?
  • What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
  • Who is allowed to do acupuncture?
  • What kind of training do people get before they are allowed to needle?
  • What are some signs that your practitioner may be unsafe?

These are all very important questions that should be answered for every patient who wants to be in the know.

Six follow up care tips to make the most of your acupuncture treatment

After Acupuncture: Making the Most of your Treatment

You have read about how to book your appointment with me.

You have read about what to expect during your appointment.

But what about after your appointment? What happens after an acupuncture appointment? Is there anything that you should know before you leave the office?

Absolutely. In my experience as an acupuncturist, what happens outside of the treatment space is more important than what happens inside of it. The same is true for any practitioner. Your doctor’s appointment won’t help you get over your ear infection if you don’t take your antibiotics. Your massage therapy appointment won’t be effective for more than a week if you don’t follow your practitioner’s advice.

After-care and homework are a vital part of any treatment plan. So here are six pieces of advice to help you get the most from your acupuncture treatment.

This month Reverie rolled out online scheduling. Here's your one stop shop for answers about the new system

How to schedule online with Acusimple

Gone are the days of walk-in only appointments at Reverie Acupuncture! Hooray!

Don’t get me wrong – I love that I’m able to offer that flexibility going forward for patients who just need to drop in. But being able to guarantee patients an appointment time is something I’ve been wanting for months.

For those of you on the newsletter list, you know that online scheduling just went live recently. I have chosen a practice management software called Acusimple. Acusimple will allow you to view documents relating to your treatment online, message me on a HIPAA compliant and encrypted system, and book online. It’s specifically designed for acupuncturists and their patients and in the past couple weeks of learning the system I’ve been very pleased.

But with any new change comes confusion and we have already hit a couple of snags with the process. With so many online booking programs available, it can be hard to keep track of what to do where. I will lay out a step by step process to clear up any confusion about booking.

What to expect for your first acupuncture appointment

Acupuncture – your mom has told you for years that it’s helped her headaches. Your best friend got it to help with her morning sickness. Your boss gets it for his chronic low back pain. So you’ve gone and done it – you made your first acupuncture appointment.

Now what?

Acupuncture’s popularity has skyrocketed in the past few years, but it’s very common for my new patients to be acupuncture first-timers. As newbies, it’s natural to have questions. My goal is to address many of the common questions I get before and at first appointments and give you a general idea what your session will like from beginning to end.
