The Healing Power of a Cup of Tea

It’s fall and our feeds are inundated with changing leaves, sweaters, socks, and cups of tea. But did you know that the seasonal draw to a perfect cup of tea is actually a remedy?

Tea has long been praised as a healing beverage across cultures and in this post, I’m going to discuss the healing properties of tea from a Chinese medical and seasonal living perspective.

Women’s Water: A Yin Tonic

Yin deficiency signs are pretty clear:

  • flushing face
  • night sweats
  • hot flashes
  • dry throat
  • insomnia
  • racing thoughts when you try to go to bed at night
  • sore back
  • constipation
  • ringing ears/tinnitus
  • dizziness

You know what this sounds like? Menopause. Or for some women, menstruation. Or others just…life.

You see, women are mostly yin. We are yin to the masculine yang. So yin deficiency tends to be a bit more obvious in us. Maybe that’s why in my practice this recipe is the one I tend to recommend the most.

Seven tips for a natural postpartum recovery

Congratulations mama! You did it.

Some say that it was the hardest thing they have ever done in their life. Others say it was the best. Most agree it’s a little of both.

Whatever you think about labor and delivery and however you went about it, there is no argument: its recovery time.

I know some of you are reading this thinking that recovery will be no bigdeal. Some of you may even go to Target tomorrow. I hope that this post will change your mind.

Even if you feel great, you just ran your body through the ringer. It will take five weeks for your body to start to feel normal. Some traditional texts say that it will take 100 days for you to be back to where you were before you got pregnant. I’ve heard some professionals say that it can take up to three years to fully recover from childbirth.

But I’m here to give you good news. If you manage your recovery right, not only can you bounce back sooner, but you can bounce back better. The postpartum period is one of three opportunities a woman has to heal herself and build on the foundation she had before pregnancy so she can be harder, better, faster and stronger.

The first tip? Bed rest.

My family's cold fighting home remedy

Three herb broth: a traditional cold fighting remedy

Any pregnant woman can attest: having a cold while pregnant is awful. You already can’t breathe normally, but yeah sure, let’s add a stuffy nose and a cough to the mix!

Of course you don’t have to be pregnant to be miserable with a cold and you certainly don’t have to be pregnant to be familiar with them. According to the CDC an adult will average 2-3 colds per year, each lasting an average of 7-10 days. Since the cold is caused by a virus you can’t take anything for it either – it’s just a matter of rest, fluids and waiting.

What if I told you that you could cut that in half? And that if you acted quickly enough you could even nip the disease in the bud before it even got annoying. And that all it would take is a trip to the grocery store?
